Apple Store May Unionize Store in St. Louis

Earlier this year, the company faced a lawsuit from three former employees who claimed they weren’t paid for all the hours they worked and that they had to deal with “unfair” labor practices.

Now, Apple is facing another problem. The store of St. Louis, which is one of the busiest in the country, could unionize and become the first Apple store in America to do so.

The store of St. Louis has been organizing for months and has almost reached its goal of having 75% of employees on board with unionizing and 50% willing to sign a petition to make it happen.

Employees at the St. Louis are asking for the right to unionize with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. The new chapter would be a first for any Apple retail store in the United States.

The International Association of Machinists filed a petition on Wednesday with the US National Council on Labor Relations, seeking to represent about 80 employees at the Missouri facility.

In a recent interview with the local newspaper, the manager of a unionized store revealed that the union has struggled to get higher wages and better benefits for its workers. If these conditions are not met for employees, they may go on strike in protest.

Apple retailers are taking matters into their own hands and trying to make their store the third of about 272 Apple locations across the United States to organize, following the Machinists’ victories in Maryland in June and another. Workers at a store in St. Louis, Missouri, say they want to unionize because they’re tired of being underpaid and working too hard.
